Lek's Dance
4/16/2023 I got to spend 4 days in the Hays, Kansas area recently. That, to be honest, is not all that great of a thing. The most exciting experience in Hays was when a tumbleweed blew past the car in the middle of town. I was not there to see tumbleweeds. I was there to see prairie chickens; the maniacs of the open range. I had to fly into Hays on Friday (car rental was not open on the weekend) and that gave me two days in the area before I would be visiting the leks.

Workcation (The Deep Freeze Edition)
1/29/2021 - 2/6/2021 I recently spent 9 days on a workcation. You know - where you travel to a place and try to squeeze in as much birding as you can while working your normal week? That is a workcation. I am lucky enough to have a job and a boss that is willing to let me do this on occasion. It is not easy; especially in the times of Covid. I am not going to Duluth, MN to see the town and meet its people, though. Nope, I am there for the birds. I have been to Duluth b

I Was Told This Was Not a Beach Vacation
7/3/2020 - 7/6/2020 So, there I was, laying on the sand-and-pebble beach of Lake Michigan. The sun was shining on the horizon, and the waves were gently lapping at the shore. We had arrived early to beat the holiday crowds. I brought my camera and was casually eyeing some pictures of this cute little thing wandering down the shore. But, let's back up a couple days. I am getting ahead or myself. For various reasons that did not pan out, I was supposed to be in Michigan on

2100 + 1! (A New Mexico Long Weekend)
12/12/2019 - 12/15/2019 You plan and you dream and you hope. It is the best you can do. Last weekend, my brother and I finally hopped on a plane and headed to Albuquerque, NM. It was a trip we had talked about taking for years. Albuquerque is home to the Sandia Crest, and Sandia Crest is one of the few places where you can see all three species of Rosy-Finch. Variously accentuated, North American Rosy-Finch come in three types: Black, Gray-crowned, and Brown-capped. In

Never Say Never (Or How I Found Myself Back at Miami Beach)
A bit of history: Several years ago, my girlfriend and I did a two week tour of the southern parts of Florida. We started out down in the Keys, including a trip down to Ft. Jefferson, and worked our way up to Miami, Lake Okeechobee, over to Ft. Myers/Sanibel, and finally up to Tampa. As part of the trip, we spent a day on the beach in Miami Beach. It's not really my thing, but my girlfriend loves her beach time. We departed the next day to head up to Green Cay and the Lo
